All the bills are getting paid but there isn’t much left over for “extras” even visiting family is going to become an extra I’m afraid.

In an attempt to declutter my life I haven’t bought yarn or other craft supplies in a while. I still have three Rubbermaid bins full of various fibers and I’m intending on using them for gifts this year. We usually plan to spend 200 dollars per kid, this year I just don’t think that’s going to happen. For one thing we’ll have a three month old at Christmas; new born children do not need a lot of gifts. I will be knitting for the baby exclusively though I did already pick up a set of finger puppets on esty to put away from him/her’s stocking.

My other two kids are still young enough that it’s cool that I make things for them, but up until last year I hadn’t actually made them anything for Christmas. I didn’t realize that my making them things throughout the year that they would actually really like something super special (and handmade) for xmas. I knit each of them a hat for the winter and my son wore that hat to school every single day. He told everyone “My mom made me this”, my daughter, who is three, loves her winter hat so much that she still pulls it on despite the fact that it’s June. She puts it on and tells whoever is around “My mommy make this for me”. It didn’t occur to me that I could use my craft for actual gifts for them. I grew up thinking that Christmas gifts had to be shiny and new and just out of the box when in reality it is actually the thought and effort that counts.

You’d think I’d know that by now, at least I’m glad that my children do!
Last year I made them knit donuts and pie slices to go along with a wooden play kitchen that we did end up buying for them. This year, since we have to cut back anyway, I’ve got a pretty impressive list of gifts-to-knit for these kids. Granted, they are going to know that these things didn’t come from Santa but the pile from Mama (and Dad since he did buy alllll the yarn) is going to be unusually large this year.

I’ve actually already started my knitting since I’ll be giving birth in September, I’d like to have *most* of it done by then since babies require a little bit of a time investment on my part, my knitting time may be reduced ;-)

I’m also interested in doing mostly free patterns for all the reasons mentioned above.Joshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15664094316259973604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918623399165742892.post-10576333723578875252008-05-17T07:34:00.000-07:002008-05-17T07:37:11.623-07:00Spaghetti with Meat Sauce from Apples for Jam

It was pretty good, different, but good. I'm lactose intolerant so I had to alter the recpie a bit, but it still turned out rather well!

Apple Puffed Pancake for the Lactose Intolerant

6 eggs
1 ½ cups soy milk
1 cup flour
3 Tbls sugar
1 tsp vanilla
½ tsp salt
½ tsp cinnamon
1 Tbls margarine
2 apples peeled & chopped
3 Tbls brown sugar

Preheat oven to 425. In a blender or large bowl, mix eggs, milk, flour, sugar, vanilla, salt and cinnamon until well blended. Melt margarine in a 9×13” pan in oven, add apple slices to baking dish and return to oven until butter sizzles, do not let it brown. Remove dish from oven and immediately pour batter over apples. Sprinkle with brown sugar and bake for 20 minutes or until puffed and brown, Serve immediately.

We did think that it wasn't quite sweet enough for us so next time I think I'll toss the apple bits in some cinnamon sugar and also use vanilla soy milk in place of regular (Thanks Marie for that tip!).

The kids ate it though, well one of them did, my 3-year-old has been super picky lately and she's not eating much. Hubs and I liked it though!!Joshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15664094316259973604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918623399165742892.post-50005996498319703642008-05-15T08:47:00.000-07:002008-05-15T08:54:52.224-07:00scienceSomething else I did when I was younger was a lot of easy at home science experiments. One of my favorite ones was putting white flowers in colored water and watching the flower change color as it drank.

Yesterday I could not find any white flowers but we had celery, so I figured that would do in a pinch. The kids had a ball picking out what colors they wanted to use and I explained to them that the celery would drink up the water through the little tubes on the bottom of the stalk and the leaves would change colors.

They didn't believe me.

Here is our celery this morning:

This is a really fun and easy thing to do with kids, especially since it doesn't involve anything dangerous/hot/etc.

All you need is a leafy stalk of celery, some drinking glasses, cool water and food coloring!Joshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15664094316259973604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918623399165742892.post-62202258852323155652008-05-13T17:44:00.000-07:002008-05-13T17:51:41.067-07:00Flower PressingI used to do this every year. Of course I said "used to" because for the last several years of my life I feel like I've been rushing.

I need to stop.

So today it was 60 degrees and sunny (yesterday it had snowed!) so while my oldest was at school my 3-year-old and I went outside to collect flowers to press. She did really well, although she really wants to get to the "make stuff with them" part right now hopefully in a couple weeks she'll still be into it.

I regret not having pressed any flowers from when we lived in New Mexico. I have however been painting, walls. The kids' room is very close to being finished and the main bath room is on it's way as well. I still have to do a few touch ups here and there in those two rooms, but mostly they are just waiting for curtains!

Finding curtains proved to be a really big pain. Hubs picked up some for the kids' room all on his own, and I haven't seen them yet. Scary! I got curtains for the master bedroom and the computer room (both of which still need painted and don't really yet need curtains) but when they are on sale for 5 dollars..well you buy curtains!

So I realize that Christmas is soon-ish. I think everything is pretty well covered, maybe, I think. I dunno actually. Since everything is up in storage..let's just say I'm hoping to have everything back on track by October 15 including an xmas inventory as well as my webshop back up and running.

Also, I think my cat has fleas. However the personal is crowding out the crafty at this point in my life.

All I can say is: argh.

I'm not sure I can handle anymore.

Still didn't weave in the ends on my Twiggy sweater. We're moving, and I'm actually starting to pack up things that I won't be using, sad to say that Twiggy is one of them at the moment. I think we've decided on a color for that room as well, hmm. Pictures will be forthcoming I'm sure. This is the first big project that Tony and I are going to be undertaking. I'm a bit nervous about it frankly.

I also picked up yarn tonight to start on a couple of new projects. I still need to weave the ends in on my Twiggy though, tomorrow for sure! I promise!

I want to cast on for the skating sweater or the rockafeller jacket from the Twinkle's book. I have the yarn from both but I have no idea what I wanna doooo (i'm whining).

Humph. Poor Me.

Went and saw Aaron Lewis last night with the hubs, it was a great show!Joshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15664094316259973604noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918623399165742892.post-51151391680668725572007-08-24T10:44:00.000-07:002007-08-24T10:51:18.394-07:00Twiggy !OMG I finished something large, and for me!

Well almost. I still have to weave in the ends and graft the seams under the arms but the knitting is done!!

and despite the fact that it's not really finished, I HAD to try it on, you understand.

I love the way this fits! What I didn't love so much is the decreasing in the pattern argh, I just sort of winged it and apparently it worked out!

I'm going to make myself go do some housework before I weave in the ends.

Also: I think I have worked out what I'm going to make my cousin's baby. Now I just have to wait and hear from them if they know the gender yet. yay babies!Joshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15664094316259973604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918623399165742892.post-72428106886421811702007-08-24T08:16:00.001-07:002007-08-24T08:20:24.141-07:00baby knitsMy cousin's wife is pregnant with their first child. This is amazing news because apparently, they weren't supposed to be able to have children.

These people are sort of estranged from the family at the moment but I really like this cousin and his wife despite the family drama and I love an excuse to knit baby things!

Only, I have no idea what to make. I don't think they are finding out the gender and I haven't seen these people in over a year, I don't really know what they are "into". I'm thinking a simple baby blanket and a hat. Both patterns/yarn to be determined, maybe I'll go up to the store today. Maybe. Maybe not, I do have both of my own children today which makes trips to any store sort of um..tiring.Joshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15664094316259973604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918623399165742892.post-15226543617674787592007-08-24T07:11:00.000-07:002007-08-24T07:13:11.205-07:00Vegan CupcakesAre yummy.

Joshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15664094316259973604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918623399165742892.post-70093489062566942332007-08-23T16:30:00.000-07:002007-08-23T16:33:28.502-07:00I'm on ravelry now and a WIPI never take pics of WIPs, but thanks to Ravelry's notebook, I have started. I hate putting something up there without a picture. Ahem.

Twiggy from Twinkle's Big City Knits

I'm starting on the body of the sweater now. It's moving along pretty quickly! I netflix'd a season of Gilmore Girls, we'll see how much I can get done during this disc....

And now that my blog is offically linked ot my Ravelry page I will not be shamed into actually doing something to zee blog. Right now I'm using blogger templates and it looks like poo. At least I could add some links.Joshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15664094316259973604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918623399165742892.post-10750241492054983702007-08-16T17:01:00.000-07:002007-08-16T17:03:50.853-07:00and yeah160 people ahead of me for Ravelry which is a lot less than this morning!

I have pictures to upload. Hmph.Joshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15664094316259973604noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918623399165742892.post-87971731979233126692007-08-14T07:04:00.000-07:002007-08-14T07:27:44.518-07:00Let's try this againI've had several blogs throughout my Internet years. Several, I don't think the count ever made it into the 100's but it was definitely at least 20ish.

I have a problem with "stick-to-it-ness". I never finish or keep up with anything that I start as far as blogs are concerned. Mostly, I start feeling like I'm giving up too much of my personal life and I freak out and stop posting. I'm going to try to not do that this time. Although I am trying to get in to Ravelry so I guess I'll be moving over there sometime soon but until then.

I have a lot of on my plat at the moment, knit-wise. We (as in my family and I) are in a bit of a money situation as my husband has just started a new job where we only get paid once a month. We'll be fine, we just have to rearrange some things, and we're in the middle of moving. Ha. So by the time this is all sorted out it's probably going to be October. October is when we really start to get serious about the winter holidays. I'm not sure how much money we're going to have to spend at Christmas time so I'm planning on making a lot of things for them. I don't believe in going into massive debt for Christmas and am going to try to avoid that.Joshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15664094316259973604noreply@blogger.com0
